Angus the Drummer

My Mother has always claimed that I was a drummer In Utero, kicking along to songs on the radio. And ever since I have been whapping on stuff.

1970, age 5. Several things here:

1) My pants. 2) That painting. WTF? 3) The 500lb. TV. 4) The decoupaged Magi. 5) The lamp, based on the Witch King's mace from the Lord of the Rings. 6) One word: Paneling.

All that and the ever-present second hand smoke, and you have my childhood in the 1970's.

1972, Age 7.

I think this was the last in a long line of kiddie drum sets that I would receive each Christmas, and utterly destroy by New Years. At age 7 my parents relented and got me an adult drum kit.

1975, Age 10.

First time on stage. Johnny Martin and I are singing Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" at a cub scout talent show. And, we won! 50 dollars* and a gold cup**!

(*Monopoly. **Our troup leaders bowling trophy that we had to give back.)

1988, Age 23.

This was my second set, garage sale $40.00. Not pictured is the original gawd-awful orange 'glitterflake' finish, which I painstakingly peeled off. I also added various mis-matched components and a lot baling wire and duct tape.

Oh, and the last appearance of my chin.

1989, Age 24.

Same set with even more fleamarket finds stuck on. I was in Quazimojo at this point, in that garage studio for the next ten years. (Fun Fact!: I worked at Community Hospital at this point, and we eventually covered the entire studio in eggcrate foam taken from patients that had died.)

1989, age 25.

Enter Pflip, my Pearl World Class 7 piece kit with rack. I added roto-toms (in pic) and several other woodblocks, bells, and eventually 10 cymbals. Fun with insurance settlements! Note also that I have a microphone and appear to be "singing". Unfortunately what emerges sounds like a yodeling clock radio alarm.

1990, Age 25. First Gig with Quazimojo, at a dive bar in Live Oak.The Latham Brothers rhythm section.

1991, age 26. Promo Shot with Quazimojo: Mike, Lisa, Me and Don.1992. Gig in Quasti. Looks like I have the double bass drum contraption working, as well as a serious mullet going. Business in front - party in the back!

1994, age 29. Rockin' the porta-potties!

I decided to learn hand drums. This is a July 4th gig in San Jose with Jim Greiner's Hands On! troupe, who I performed with for 4+ years. That day we played for 8 hours with three 15 minute breaks.

1993. First band on the Wharf-to-Wharf course. The good news is you get to play for 10,000 people. The bad news is your audience is running away from you.

1995, age 30. Quazimojo Mark II: Barbara, me, Don and Ed. This was a "Leo" costume Party. I came as the constellation. 1996, Age 31. Cycling Club gig in 95 degree temperatures.

2002, age 37. Playing Riq for the Village Idiots at a pirate party.2007, Age 41. Last several years I have been doing a lot of music for large public rituals. Here is a Beltane I played with my fellow Goth Faeries, Victoria and Amanda. Looks like I have the doumbek out. Dig the socks.

2007, age 41. Mykey's Epic birthday party.

After 15 years Quazimojo finally called it quits and Cath and I reorganized as AMN, the band with many names. Here we are, Me, Cath, Jack and John (not in pic), introducing "House of the Rising Grace".

So that's it. Music IS the harshest mistress, But I have managed to have a buttload of fun doing it.

Whap, whap, whappity-whap.
